Hefner studied at the University of Illinois where he majored in psychology. Hefner majored in psychology because of his interest in human behavior and his goal to help people enjoy freedom expression especially with respect to self-gratification. Hefner was also fascinated by illustrations growing up and he wanted to be a cartoonist when he graduated which was why he also minored in art and creative writing. Hefner continued his studies at Northwestern University grad school where he studied sociology. During grad school he wrote a paper that looked at United States sex laws. Hefner’s experience in grad school was short lived as he dropped out after only one semester.
