Legend graduated from high school at the age of 16 as the class salutatorian and prom king. He says he turned down an offer from Harvard to go to the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, Legend majored in English with a concentration in African-American Literature. He was a member of the Counterparts, a student a cappella group and performed at different clubs around campus. One of his friends also introduced him to Lauryn Hill and was offered an audtion to her band but he did not make the band. After he graduated, Legend went on to work for Boston Consulting Group, while still pursuing performing gigs at night.
