Knight majored in journalism at the University of Oregon, he was likely influenced by his father who was a newspaper publisher. At Oregon, Knight was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, he was also a runner. During his college days he became introduced to the issues in the athlete footwear market. After a brief stint in the army, Knight enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. At Stanford, Knight had to do a project where he proposed a new business idea with a marketing plan. Knight’s idea was to start a company where they would produce superior athletic sports wear for a cheaper price in countries like Japan, an idea which he would pursue after graduating.
