Sandberg studied economics at Harvard University, At Harvard, Sandberg co-founded an organization called Women in Economics. Sandberg also met former United States Treasury Secretary, Larry Summers who was a professor at Harvard at the time. Sanders became her mentor and thesis advisor. Sandberg ended up graduating at the top of her class and was awarded the John H. Williams Prize for her achievement. Her mentor Larry Summers had also just become the World Bank’s Chief Economist and he helped set up Sandberg with a job as a research assistant at the World Bank. After working at the World Bank for a few years, Sandberg returned to Harvard for her MBA where she graduated with distinction.
